Types of Oak Trees in Waco Texas
All oak trees fall into three categories or families of oaks. They are Red, White, and Live, also known as the Willow family.
The Southern Red Oak, also called the Spanish Oak family, includes Texas Red Oak, Blackjack Oak, Shumard Oak, and Water Oak. These Oaks are most vulnerable to Oak Wilt disease. Oak Wilt disease is a fungus that spreads from tree to tree in two ways. The first way is by tree sap-eating beetles that carry the fungal spores with them to new trees. The second way is when trees are too close together and have interconnected roots. The fungus is able to move from tree to tree through the root system.
The White Oak family consists of the Bur Oak, Post Oak, Chinquapin Oak, Lacey Oak, Shin Oak, and Monterrey Oak. This family of Oaks are the most resistant to Oak Wilt disease.
The Live Oak or Willow Oak family are made up of the Live Oak, Escarpment Oak, Coastal Oak, Willow Oak, Pin Oak, and these oak trees are moderately resistant to Oak Wilt disease.
To help prevent Oak Wilt in the first place, don’t prune oak trees in the spring or fall. Always seal the wounds from the pruning cuts with a good tree wound paint sealant.

How to correctly Trim a Live Oak Tree
The Live Oak Tree is most likely the most valuable tree on your property. Trees adds significant value to a homeowner’s property. In Central Texas the most valuable trees are the ones that are drought tolerant because they can survive periods of draught, conserves water lowering your water bill, and live the longest. The Live Oak Tree is very valuable because it is a very large tree that provides shades, and if close enough to your house can lower your electric bill for cooling, and because with proper care the Live Oak can live to well over 100-years old. Some Live Oaks are estimated to be 500-years old.
The photo below illustrates a Live Oak Tree with a U-shaped Co-dominant trunk or leader
A Live Oak Tree with a U-shaped Co-dominant leaders is stronger than narrow V-shaped leaders. The wider the U-shape leader is the stronger the joint between the two leaders will be.
Below is an example of a narrow V-shape between Co-dominant leaders. This V-joint is weaker than a U-shaped joint on Co-dominant leaders
When your Live Oak has Co-dominant leaders with a Narrow V-shape, the tree will have more bark inclusion that makes the joint weaker. Bark inclusion is bark hidden under the outer bark between two trunks or leaders. The hidden under layer of bark prevents the leader branches from having a strong attachment. The photo below is an example of weak branch attachments that sheared off the tree because of bark inclusion. Imagine if these branches had been hanging over your car in your driveway of your children's playset in the yard?
The correct way to trim a Live Oak tree is to start by removing branches that crossover and rub against each other. When branches rub against each other in the wind the rubbing action wears away bark and creates wounds. Tree wounds make a tree more vulnerable to tree eating insects, tree diseases, like Oak Wilt, and tree rot.
Another tip is to remove any branches that are hanging or pointing down
When using a saw to make cuts to remove branches make a bottom cut and a top cut. This technique will help prevent the branch from tearing off the tree trunk and leaving a wound.
The objective of Trimming a Live Oak Tree is to promote the growth of the dominant leader. The dominant leader will then be healthier and sprout new growth.
